Passport extensions, emergency and lost passport

Extension of passport

It is possible to extend a passport that is about to or has expired within the last 3 months, should you need your passport for immediate travel. Provisional passports can be issued at any of our missions or Honorary Consulates in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. A passport application must be submitted in person for this service. The application form and documentation requirement can be found here for adults (over 18 years) and here for children (under 18 years). When applying for an extension of your passport, it may be possible to apply for a new passport at the same time - paying one fee for both passports. This option is however only available when applying for an extension at The Embassy in Canberra, the Consulate General in Sydney, the Honorary Consulate in Melbourne and Auckland.

The validity of the passport can only be extended for as long as is necessary to complete the journey, however maximum one year from date of extension. Prior to requesting an extension, please check whether the country you wish to travel to accepts an extension of your passport and whether the country has other validity requirements (such as validity of passport for a certain period beyond entry/departure date). You can find a guide on other countries' passport and visa regulations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (in Danish only).

An application fee applies - Fee can be viewed on The Ministry of Foreign Affairs list of fees.

Emergency/provisional passports (nødpas)

An emergency/provisional passport is a travel document, which can be issued when it is not possible to issue a new passport or extend the validity of the current passport before your planned trip. An emergency/provisional passport must be surrendered after use. Provisional passports can be issued at any of our missions or Honorary Consulates in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. A passport application must be submitted in person for this service. The application form and documentation requirements can be found here for adults (over 18 years)  and here for children (under 18 years). When applying for an emergency/provisional passport, it may be possible to apply for a new passport at the same time - paying one fee for both passports. You must also bring one passport photo when applying for emergency/provisional passport at any of the Honorary Consulates in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

Please see the photo requirements here.

If your current passport is lost, stolen or damaged, you must bring other identification documentation (drivers licence, copy of passport or birth certificate).

The validity of the emergency passport may only be for as long as is necessary to complete the journey, however maximum one year from date of issuance. Prior to requesting an emergency passport, please check whether the country you wish to travel to accepts a Danish emergency passport and whether the country has other validity requirements (such as validity of passport a certain period beyond entry/departure date). You can find a guide on other countries' passport and visa regulations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (in Danish only).

An application fee applies - Fee can be viewed on The Ministry of Foreign Affairs list of fees.

In emergency situations please contact the nearest mission. An additional fee applies outside normal office hours.

If you cannot provide/present your most recent passport (i.e. if it is lost, stolen or damaged),an additional fee applies.  Fee can be viewed on The Ministry of Foreign Affairs list of fees.

Lost passport

The loss of your passport must immediately be reported to the nearest Danish Mission as well as the local police. If the passport has been lost or stolen in Australia, please contact the Australian Police on 131 444. You must complete a 'Declaration of Lost Passport' when reporting it as lost with the nearest Danish Mission.

If your previous passport has been stolen, you must in addition also bring a copy of a police report (or provide the Danish Mission with the police record e-number) when applying for a new passport.

Please note that you should never travel on a passport that has been reported lost and later found. There is a very high risk immigration and airlines will refuse you to travel on the passport. You should instead apply for a new passport.
