Sustainable Food Production
The Australian market for food and beverage processing is significantly growing and there is increased demand for sustainable solutions. The food and beverage industry is one of the largest and most important sectors of the Australian economy and accounts for approx. 30% of the domestic manufacturing sales and service income. Australia seek to accelerate the green transition in this sector which provides opportunities for Danish solutions to optimize manufacturing capabilities and energy efficiency towards sustainable and circular economy principles. Government policies and industry initiatives support this shift towards sustainability, promoting investment in research and technology to develop more efficient and eco-friendly production methods.

Green Build & Urban Development
The Australian market for building and urban development is significantly growing and with the country’s increased commitments to energy efficiency, decarbonisation and circular economy the direction and requirements of the sector is going green. Government regulations and incentives encourage developers and home owners to adopt sustainable building practices and comprehensive retrofitting strategies, offering subsidies for projects that paves the way towards Australia’s net-zero goals. There is an urge for climate action & resilience as well as a desire to become a global player in the urban green transition. This positions Danish expertise in energy efficiency, urban sustainability, architecture and engineering as valuable solutions- and knowledge partners for Australian stakeholders moving the land down under much closer to Denmark than the world map suggests.

Renewable Energy
The sector for renewable energy is growing in Australia with a supportive regulatory environment assisting the sector to transition from fossil energy. The Australian Government is supporting 40 GW of renewable energy projects through the Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) in order to reach their goal of 82% renewable energy by 2030. In comparison, Australia had around 40% renewable energy by the end of 2024. The country has some of the world’s best renewable energy resources making it very attractive for projects within on-/offshore wind, solar, battery and pumped hydro. This provides major opportunities for Danish companies who can benefit from a longstanding strong collaboration between Denmark and Australia.

Power-to-X (Green Hydrogen)

Australia has some of the best wind and solar resources in the world to produce renewable energy. Combined with Australia’s massive landmasses, the conditions are ideal for green hydrogen and Power-to-X (PtX) projects. PtX is seen as a key opportunity to transition jobs from the fossil industry (coal, gas and mining) into a green economy and the sector is therefore getting substantial funding. The Australian Government has agreed to spend AU$ 4bn on getting the first strategic PtX projects started as well as a Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive which will provide producers with AU$ 2 per kg hydrogen. Australia is focusing on using the hydrogen to decarbonise 3 main sectors: the mining sector (incl. green iron/steel), green ammonia and liquid fuels for shipping, aviation etc. Danish developers and solutions providers have major opportunities in Australia as the country is aiming to be one of the global leaders within hydrogen before 2030.

Other sectors
Health and Life Science
Australia’s Health and Life Science sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in Australia and is evolving with a focus on sustainability and innovation. Due to demand for a full range of sophisticated medical equipment and an expectation for state-of-the-art medical treatment, there is a continuing need for high quality, innovative medical products. This provides opportunities for Danish solutions.
Defence
Australia currently allocates AUD 59 billion (approximately DKK 246.5 billion) to its defence budget, representing 2.03% of national GDP. The Department of Defence employs a permanent workforce of around 77,000 personnel. In 2024, the Department released its Net Zero Strategy, setting a target to reduce emissions by 43% by 2030 and to achieve net zero by 2050. The strategy highlights the importance of close collaboration with industry partners, international allies, and the broader community to reach these goals.
These ambitions create significant opportunities for Danish companies, particularly those providing advanced green technologies and energy-efficient solutions. Denmark’s global reputation for sustainable innovation positions it as a natural partner in supporting Australia’s defence sector transition toward a low-emissions future.
Sustainable Mining
The market for sustainable mining in Australia has been growing steadily due to increased emphasis on environmental responsibility and ethical resource extraction. Australia, as a significant player in the global mining industry, has seen a rising demand for sustainable practices in mining operations. This includes initiatives focused on reducing carbon emissions, water conservation, land rehabilitation, and community engagement. Stakeholders, including investors, governments, and consumers, are increasingly favoring companies that prioritize sustainable mining practices, leading to the adoption of technologies and strategies that minimize environmental impact while maximizing resource extraction efficiency.
